Why This Nashville Bed and Breakfast Has No TVs
Walk into a guest suite at Sylvan Park Boarding House and you'll notice something missing before you notice anything else: there's no television on the wall. That's on purpose. As a Nashville bed and breakfast housed in a lovingly restored 1910 home, we made an early decision to leave the screens out of the bedrooms. What replaces them is quieter, softer, and, we think, far more restorative than another night of half-watched television.
In a city that never quite stops humming, a room without a glowing screen is a small act of hospitality. Here's why we chose it, and what your stay feels like because of it.
The Case for a Screen-Free Room
Most of us fall asleep to a screen and wake up reaching for one. A stay should be a break from that rhythm, not a continuation of it. When we reopened this historic home as a boutique inn in 2026, we asked ourselves what actually helps a guest rest, and the honest answer was fewer things competing for attention. No blue light at midnight. No autoplay pulling you into a third episode. Just a genuinely restful room, climate controlled and wrapped in Frette linens and Peacock Alley down bedding.
You won't feel like anything is missing. Free high-speed Wi-Fi runs throughout the house, so if you want to stream something on your own device or catch up on email, you can. We simply took the screen off the wall so that peace is the default and distraction is the choice.
What Fills the Space Instead
Take away the television and a room breathes differently. Mornings start with fresh, locally sourced breakfast and coffee or tea that flows all day. Afternoons drift toward the front porch, the courtyard, a game of bocce ball in the yard, or a good book you finally have time for. When you want company or a cocktail, Tantísimo, our on-site Latin American cafe, sits just through the rear courtyard for brunch, dinner, or happy hour.
Step outside and the Sylvan Park neighborhood does the rest. Tree-lined streets, the Richland Creek Greenway, Richland Park Farmers Market, and Centennial Park are all close by, an easy trade for whatever was going to be on tonight.
Rest That Actually Feels Like Rest
Each of our eight suites is named and individually designed, with a private ensuite bathroom, robes and slippers, Grown Alchemist toiletries, and a Smeg refrigerator stocked for the little comforts. Without a television anchoring the room, the design gets to be the focus, and so does your sleep. Guests tell us they slept better here than they have in months, and we suspect the missing screen has a lot to do with it.
Perfect for a Nashville Staycation or Visiting Guests
If you're a local craving a reset, a Nashville staycation just across town is one of the easiest luxuries there is. Book a suite, put the phone on the nightstand face down, and let a night without television remind you what unhurried feels like. And if friends or family live in Sylvan Park, sending your houseguests to a boutique hotel in Nashville that prizes quiet means everyone gets their rest, your visitors included.
Screen-free doesn't mean disconnected. It means present, unhurried, and genuinely off the clock, which is exactly what a good stay should feel like.
